What comes to mind when someone mentions Breakfast at Tiffany’s? That black Givenchy dress—and oh, Audrey Hepburn. Believe me, nothing compares to Holly Golightly strolling down 5th Avenue in the early, empty hours of the morning, croissant and coffee in hand, encapsulated by an air of elegance and glamour. Quite frankly, it’s the evening gown—the Givenchy’s masterpiece—that steals the show. It’s timeless.
So, with timeless in mind, let’s do a little shopping. Here are some, if not all, fashion investment pieces you should, well, invest in!
Outerwear trends are fickle. When buying coats that err on the expensive side, pick them in classic hues like black or camel. Vince’s Scuba Coat, for example, is casual enough for everyday wear. Theory’s Nest Wash Café Coat, slightly more “put together”, is also as easy to dress up or dress down. Joseph’s Win Wool & Cashmere Trench and DKNY’s Slim Jacket with Suede inserts are perfect variations to the black and neutral-color scheme. The idea is to invest in something you’d wear time and time again—something that can be easily paired with your everyday basics.
Blue JeansThere’s nothing quite like a pair of derrière-enhancing, leg-lenthening jeans THAT hug you in all the right places AND survive multiple washes intact. Finding it often requires a little more money and a lot more patience but when you do, I promise you’ll be kicking yourself wondering why you ever settled for less. I get it, splurging on jeans seems absurd. Think of it this way, instead of buying yourself five pairs of mediocre jeans that a couple months each, you’re buying one pair you will wear through and through (with anything and everything) for years to come because it fits perfectly. Rag & Bone’s The Skinny Jeans, J Brand’s 910 Low Rise Skinny Jeans, Citizen’s of Humanity’s Avedon Skinny Jeans, and Hudson’s Shine Midrise Skinny Jeans are my personal favorites.
Little Black Dress
Audrey wore them. Okay, well, she wore THE ONE that inspired it all, but then again, why shouldn’t you wear a modern-day alternative, a variation? These simple sleek numbers work in every scenario imaginable. Here’s Cynthia Rowley’s Long Sleeve Flounce Dress, d. Ra’s Milan Dress, T by Alexander Wang’s Jersey Twist Draped Sleeveless Dress, and BB Dakota’s Zocia Dress.
Designer PumpsNot all designer pumps are better than their Aldo alternatives, but some actually are. When you take into consideration the shoe’s material, craftsmanship, and overall walkability sometimes, just sometimes, they’re worth the plunge. If you do decide to splurge, make sure its on something you’ll actually wear more than once. Manolo Blahnik, Kurt Geiger London, Paul Andrew, and Brian Atwood all have great selections.
If you’re looking for the most reliable place to sink your wardrobe dough, a classic handbag will be your best bet. Get this, there’s a resale value if you keep it in pristine condition, which trust me, wouldn’t be that hard when you spend a couple month’s paycheck. Kellys and Birkins aside, Hermès’ Constance Cross Body Shoulder Bag, Chanel’s Lambskin Flap Shoulder Bag, Mulberry’s Alexa Leather Satchel, and Céline’s Nano Bag are the go-tos.
Before I bid you adieu and leave you to your shopping, here’s one last thing to keep in mind. These items are only worth the splurge if they’re timeless and they’re timeless only if you’ll wear them more than once. #WWHD, what would Holly do? Would she/you wear them down 5th Avenue? Yes? Buy it.[separator type=”thin”]
