How-To: Take Makeup Off

Chances are, you’re more likely to jump face first into the inviting folds of your bed. Um, how many times have you properly removed makeup in the past week? That depends. If you count the makeup remover wipes, then definitely every day.

Psssst! We don’t. We don’t count the wipes.

What if we told you that makeup remover wipes alone, while handy, aren’t quite enough to take away the layers of BB cream, foundation, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick? What if studies have shown that improper makeup removal leads to premature aging? What if the way you treat your skin now makes it more likely for you to develop laughter lines and crow’s feet within the year? No, thank you? We thought so.

So check it, here are the ABCs to keeping your skin clean, fresh, and moisturized:

If you’re wearing bold lips and equally bold eyes, the key is to remove those areas first. With cotton pads and a makeup remover solution of your choice (or wipes if need be), begin by gently wiping away as much of the lipstick as you can. Then, soak the cotton pads in the same solution and place them on your eyelids. WITHOUT rubbing, let the pads rest in place for a couple of seconds before patting and gently easing the false eyelashes, mascara, and eyeshadow off. The key is to minimize as much pulling, tugging, and harsh wiping as possible. You don’t want to aggravate the delicate skin around your eyes.

Face Wash & Cleansers

To remove the remainder of your makeup, use face wash or a conditioning cleansing lotion to massage and loosen up your day’s worth of foundation, bronzer, and blush. Apply the product evenly across your face before working all areas and tough spots in small circular motions with your fingers. Doing so, will steadily improve blood circulation—a.k.a younger-looking skin. If all of the makeup does not come off in the first wash, repeat this step.



Contrary to popular belief, you need not exfoliate every day. Even though exfoliating speeds up the skin’s renewal process by coaxing away dead cells, it also strips away your skin’s natural oils and moisture. You will still be minimizing the size of your pores as long as you delicately polish your face two to three times a week.

Toners & MoisturizersToner and Moisturizer

To keep your skin healthy and balanced, it’s important to apply toners and moisturizers to your clean face. Toners are great for days with heavy makeup. They are the final checkmark to making sure that you have successfully cleaned everything off. Toners are also great for sheen and oil control. That said, they sometimes may strip away too much natural oil. Whether or not you skip the toner depends entirely on how your skin is feeling. Never, however, skip moisturizing. Doing so will keep your skin soft, young, and bouncy.

The Extras

The ExtrasFinally, for those with a little extra time, pampering your face never hurts. Maybe it’s a little extra exfoliating with the Clarisonic Mia. Maybe it’s a mask that targets your t-zone. Whatever you choose to do, remember that the effort you put in to caring for your face shows.

  2. Ever since I started “properly” taking off my makeup I’ve noticed a HUGE difference. Will neverrrr go back to just the plain makeup wipes. I do use them to remove most..but never alone!
