Let’s face it: It’s that time of year where things get flaky. Your friends bail on dinner because it’s too cold to go out. The weather — ha! — the weather was supposed to be some freak snowmageddon but it turned out to be nothing more than a wimpy blizzard. And your skin? Ugh, your skin. It’s 50 layers of dead, dry, and scaly. Um, no. Not okay.

While we can’t exactly help you with the friend sitch, or really, the weather sitch, we can give you a pointer or two on dull winter skin.

Drum roll, please, for the Lo Down spa edition part deux for do-it-yourself body scrubs!

Lavender Sea Salt Scrub

You will need:

  • 3-4 dry lavender sprigs (optional)
  • 6-7 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 1 cup of sea salt
  • 1 cup of grapeseed oil

Lavender and sea salt are the perfect combination of tough and gentle. Carefully fold the ingredients together with a spatula or mixing spoon of sorts, before scooping some into your hands and exfoliating away. We personally experimented with a combination of coarse and fine sea salt. Feel free to adjust accordingly, depending on how much scrubbing you plan to do.

Coffee Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup of ground coffee
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of coconut oil

Coffee is packed with antioxidants. When applied to the body, it can lighten and brighten skin and TEMPORARILY minimize cellulite. Again, fold the ingredients together, before applying the paste to your skin and scrubbing away. While we paired this scrub with coconut oil, you can substitute it with a different oil of choice.

Grapefruit Avocado Oil Sugar Scrub

You will need:

  • 1/2 a grapefruit (squeezed)
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of avocado oil (or a mild oil of your choice)

Grapefruit has free-radical fighting enzymes which help even your skin tone and buff away everything from blemishes to wrinkles. We’re complimenting the scrub with avocado oil because it’s mild and it won’t block your pores. Make sure to really fold this concoction! Stirring it will only encourage the sugar to dissolve.

Tomato Sugar Scrub

You will need:

  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 large tomato (chopped)
  • 3/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil

For our Lo Down readers who aren’t exactly suffering through the blistery cold of the East Coast, we have for you a cooling tomato scrub, to sooth sun-damaged and peeling skin. Don’t worry about folding this mixture, it’s okay if the sugar granules aren’t as defined. We’ve picked the lemon essential oil to give it that extra fresh factor, but again, go ahead and substitute it if you prefer something else.
