Eyeliner Guide

[infobox subtitle=”Different Eyeliner Tips and Techniques” bg=”blue” color=”white” opacity=”on” space=”30″ link=”no link”]Your Eyeliner Cheat Sheet[/infobox] If you’ve ever struggled with uneven eyeliner or smeared liquid liner, you’re not alone. While eyeliner can be one of the most versatile products in your makeup arsenal, it can also be one of the most difficult to master. When used suitably, eyeliner can tie together an entire makeup look and make your eyes pop with a simple cat-eye flick. With everything from smudge sticks to kohl pencils filling every cosmetic counter these days, you may be at a loss to where to start. Luckily, we’ve compiled several of our favorite eyeliner products to keep you from ending up with raccoon eyes (unless you’re going for a 90s grunge look — if you are, keep on doing your thang).

Pencil Eyeliner

Sticking with the basics, pencil eyeliner can be applied liberally for a dramatic look or smudged out to create a more smoky effect. It’s best to stick with pencils with a creamier formulation that can be easily blended out with a shadow brush. We love Stila’s Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner and Urban Decay’s 24/7 Eye Pencil that have enough staying power to keep your liner looking just as fresh as when you applied it in the morning.

Shadow Pencils

With smooth, long-lasting wear, shadow pencils can range from bright pops of color to neutral blacks and browns. With cream products, the key is blending. Try some of our favorites, like Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil or Bobbi Brown’s Long Cream Shadow Stick.

Eye Shadow

For a subtle, smoky-eyed look, run an eyeliner brush dipped in eye shadow along your lash line, making sure to blend along the way. Eye shadow also works perfectly on the lower lash line in order to create more definition to your look. When it comes to lining your eyes, stick only to matte formulas to avoid the messy fall-out from shimmery or glittery shadows.

Gel Liner

All you need is an angled eyeliner brush to create a bold cat-eye flick. We recommend the Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner, with a creamy, easy-to-blend formulation and long-lasting power.

Liquid Liner

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”774495″] Liquid Liner is probably the trickiest and more difficult product to master. Unless you’ve always had an exceptionally steady hand, we’ve all dealt with a liquid liner blunder or two at some point in time. To avoid smears or mistakes, apply liquid liner with your eye open and looking straight ahead. That way, you can achieve the desired shape without the fear of accidentally transferring liner to your lids. Waterproof liquid liner is also your best friend during the warmer months against sweat and humidity. We love Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner and Lancome’s Precision Artliner.

Tight Lining

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”774510″] Ever wonder how the “no makeup” makeup look still manages to achieve a brightened eye without the appearance of crisp eyeliner? Tight lining, or only lining your top waterline, creates the illusion of bigger eyes while still maintaining a natural makeup look. Try Laura Mercier’s Tightline Cake Eye Liner for added color along your lash line.

Why I Fast on Mondays

Monday: oh, the duality of it. I love Monday and I also hate it with a deep passion. I hate that it will take a full 5 days for the weekend/nachos to arrive. I hate that I have to answer my emails. I hate that my alarm goes off and wakes me from my Sunday slumber. Yet, once I’m conscious I remember that I love waking up early on a summer Monday, hitting the streets before 8am when the city is still sleepy and heading out for a slow sweat at SLT. I love hitting the re-set button and having another chance to do and be. I also love fasting on Mondays, my chosen day of the week to detox until dinnertime (if you’re forced to begin your week, you may as well dive in head first).
