Frank Body On Why We NEED Coffee In Our Beauty Routines

It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with coffee. We rely on it every morning to take us from Walking Dead zombie to actual functioning human being. By our second (or third) cup of the day, we start to wish that we could bathe in the stuff. And as crazy as that sounds, we aren’t completely alone. There’s now a way for you to lather yourself in coffee without sustaining major second-degree burns, and we couldn’t be more on board. Just like it wakes you up from the inside, coffee can be used to wake you up from the outside, too. Cue superstar beauty brand Frank Body.
Born out of Melbourne, Australia, Frank is a coffee-based skincare range that uses only naturally-derived ingredients and fresh coffee grounds. You might have even seen Frank on your Instagram feed without even realizing it. That’s because Frank Body has taken the social media world by storm with the likes of Ariana Grande and Jessie J lathering up in coffee grounds and sharing their love for the brand all over social media. Fans of the skincare line call themselves the “Frankfurts,” and we aren’t ashamed to admit that we’re one of them.

It all started in January 2013 as the brainchild of five founders and longtime friends that shared a love for the internet and coffee: Steve Rowley, Alex Boffa, Jess Hatzis, Bree Johnson, and Erika Geraerts. Co-founder Steve had owned several cafes across Melbourne and noticed that one customer in particular always asked for leftover coffee grounds. He then realized that they were using coffee as a body exfoliator and discussed his find with Alex, Jess, Bree, and Erika. The team eventually came together to develop the original coffee scrub. The brand has blossomed since then with everything from facial moisturizers to scrubs and body balms.

We recently sat down with the creators of Frank to discuss how the social media giant has reinvented the way we view beauty and skincare and why every follower is a babe. Read on and discover the magic behind Frank–you’ll be calling yourself a “Frankfurt” in no time.

Why coffee? What are the benefits for using coffee grounds in your beauty routine?

When caffeine is applied topically to the skin it can stimulate blood-flow, which may help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks, psoriasis, eczema and other pesky skin conditions. In its roasted and ground form it’s the perfect natural exfoliator to buff away dry, dead skin cells, and encourage skin rejuvenation. Coffee is also packed with antioxidants that target damaging free radicals, the key culprit of many problematic skin conditions. It also has the same PH as skin, which means it will not strip any natural oils or leave skin feeling dry.

What is the story behind the “Frankfurts”? What sets the brand apart from other beauty companies?

From the start Frank Body has attempted to connect with its customers on a more personal level than that of traditional beauty brands. Customers are fond of Frank’s laid-back, cheeky conversational style. He speaks to them in a way which other beauty brands don’t. Frank thinks everyone is a babe, regardless of shape, size, colour, or age. He exists to have fun, all the while helping solving his customers varying skin care problems.

Why I Fast on Mondays

Monday: oh, the duality of it. I love Monday and I also hate it with a deep passion. I hate that it will take a full 5 days for the weekend/nachos to arrive. I hate that I have to answer my emails. I hate that my alarm goes off and wakes me from my Sunday slumber. Yet, once I’m conscious I remember that I love waking up early on a summer Monday, hitting the streets before 8am when the city is still sleepy and heading out for a slow sweat at SLT. I love hitting the re-set button and having another chance to do and be. I also love fasting on Mondays, my chosen day of the week to detox until dinnertime (if you’re forced to begin your week, you may as well dive in head first).
