I don’t know about you but dry skin aside, I am almost always simultaneously fighting a winter cold. I’ve suffered through winter after winter with NyQuil and Netflix. My skin, a second priority, is usually forgotten until it is no longer socially acceptable to wear long sleeves and long pants. Then, my daily routine becomes a mad catch-up game of how to best amp up my moisturizing ritual.

This year, in an effort to try something new, a preventative measure of sorts, I decided to tweak my diet. Smooth skin in the dead of Jonas? Check. Post-shower glow? All day, everyday.

Coming from a girl who’s a sucker for quick fixes, I know a thing or two about relying heavily on products for purely vain reasons. The beauty industry, a multi-billion-dollar trade, is extremely creative at coming up with beautifying products that help us correct and conceal blemishes and imperfections. Eye bags bigger than Gucci? Try some concealer! Dull and dead hair? Try a moisturizing mask! It’s not a question of whether or not these products work because it wouldn’t be such a profitable industry otherwise and I certainly wouldn’t hoard as much as I do. But, what if there was a way to help enhance our lotions and body butters? What if locking in moisture simply started with our diet?

Enter: internally warming foods. Yes, they exist. And yes, it’s a thing. Internally warming foods are hydrating foods that help strengthen your kidneys and adrenal glands. Because our kidney filters blood and our adrenal glands produce vital hormones for our bodies, its important to feed them with the right sustenance. Doing so not only lowers our stress levels, but it also significant lowers our sugar cravings, headaches, anxiety, and tension—essential determinants of our beauty and health.

Instagram has a love affair with avocado toast and there’s a nutritious reason why. Rich in vitamins E and B, avocados have antioxidants that help keep skin cells strong and hydrated. Filled with healthy fats that are known to help the liver’s natural detox process, the fruit, when consumed, aids with DNA repair which, in turn, reduces inflammation and redness of the skin. Even though they are high in calories, avocados are easily burned and metabolized. Still, half an avocado a day is a healthy limit to set.

Bananas have a high potassium content. Potassium helps with oxygen circulation. Good oxygen circulation leads to increased energy and brighter skin. An amazing snack, bananas are incredibly easy to digest. In fact, they even sooth your stomach lining by feeding the good bacteria in your gut. Their complex carb increases serotonin production in the body which, when eaten, makes for a happier you. Best of all, bananas have amino acids that boost healthy hair and nail growth and protect your body from aging free radicals.

If you’re a chocolate lover, you should live and breathe cacao. A superfood, it has a high concentration of antioxidants that block the formation of wrinkles. The higher the cacao percentage in your chocolate bar, or, the darker your chocolate, the better. We’re talking at least 70 percent. Like bananas, cacao has nutrients that increase blood and oxygen flow to the skin. They also contain sulfur which helps promote strong hair and nails.

Of all the fruits in the world, kiwis have the highest content of vitamin C. They can actually give you your day’s worth in just one fruit—plus or minus 50 calories! Vitamin C is essential for collagen formation and free radical defense which, if you’ve read this far, means wrinkle prevention and skin rejuvenation. Also, get this: kiwis contain anti-inflammatory enzymes that help reduce belly fat and improve allergies. How cool!
