3 Ways To Remain Hopeful


This past Friday marked a significant day in American history.

Whether you faced it with trepidation, hesitation, or plain ole fear, there’s no doubt intense emotions were involved.

Oftentimes in life, we are faced with adversity that, quite frankly, questions why things are the way they are. The inauguration, for many, was one of such instances where unfavorable circumstances touched upon a deep-rooted societal uncertainty. Regardless how you felt about the presidential transition, the inevitable happened. Trump became America’s new “leader.”

As I sit here writing this post, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I feel small and helpless. I’m not quite sure what I can do to ease fear for both others and myself. While reflecting, however, I realized that we are ultimately in charge of how we choose to deal with this uncertainty. Even though we might not be able to change the inevitable, we can still be in command of how we hold ourselves moving forward.

The Company You Keep

Surround yourself with like-minded and forward-thinking individuals. I know I will. Whether it’s enjoying a dinner date or sharing ideas on how to move forward, surround yourself with people whose opinions you respect. Together, we can and will be better.

The Conversations You Have

As much as I love and seek healthy debate from time to time, know that it’s okay to take a break. Instead of arguing, engage in conversations that inspire change. How can we learn from multiple perspectives? How can we grow as a society? Although conversations like these ones may too become heated, we are in charge of how we choose to engage and hold ourselves in those conversations. Be in command of how you let it affect you. You have a choice. You ALWAYS have a choice.

The Values You Portray

Things are easier said than done. While you may feel the need to vent (and rightfully so), use this time to lead by example. I, for one, have located my nearest Planned Parenthood to see how I can get involved. We cannot and should not allow our fear, anger, and frustration to get the best of us. Instead, we should use our energy in the most effective and positive way. 

I cannot think of a better time to demonstrate compassion, to initiate meaningful conversations, and to appreciation an array of perspectives. Perhaps, in this mess, there is a silver lining. We will, however, have to work tirelessly to find it together.

Why I Fast on Mondays

Monday: oh, the duality of it. I love Monday and I also hate it with a deep passion. I hate that it will take a full 5 days for the weekend/nachos to arrive. I hate that I have to answer my emails. I hate that my alarm goes off and wakes me from my Sunday slumber.
