Feeling A Little Under The Weather? Here’s What You Should Be Eating.

I don’t know what’s worse..feeling horrible because I’m PMSing or feeling like shit because I’m sick- either way, I hate when I’m not feeling 100% but I’ve noticed that watching what I put into my body can make a world of difference in how I feel.

If you’re currently sick or feel like a cold is coming on, it’s important to be smart about what you’re consuming. Now I’m sure you all know the basics to ingest when sick: chicken soup, TONS of fluids and honey BUT there is an abundant amount of foods you should be eating in order to stop your cold in its track or help to get rid of it faster!

Veggies

The key to getting “over the weather” if you will, is to boost your immune function (duh) so it’s important you eat foods rich in vitamin C. Vegetables such as tomatoes, bell peppers, broccoli and leafy greens are packed with this anti-oxidant! If you’re more of a fruit person then berries and citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons are high in vitamin C as well. Think colorful!

Salmon

When you’re sick your body NEEDS protein! Eating protein will help to increase your energy levels which your body needs in order to help increase the production of white blood cells to fight off infection! Salmon is an excellent source of high-quality protein that contains vitamin D as well omega-3 fatty acids which act as an anti-inflammatory. Squeeze some lemon on your salmon and you have yourself a tasty meal that will help in relieving your cold!

Avocados

I haven’t met a single soul that doesn’t like avocados and what’s not to like? They’re not only delicious but they’re actually good for you! This low-carb fruit is full of healthy fats, vitamins and minerals that aid in stimulating your immune system as well as decreasing inflammation. Avocado toast anyone?!

Yogurt

If you’re looking to soothe your throat,go for a yogurt-it’s cold and easy to eat plus it contains probiotics which can prevent sickness-causing bacteria from flourishing! Yogurt is also a good source of protein which we already know our body needs in order to keep our energy up!

Golden Milk

Feeling congested and finding it hard to breathe through your nose?(THE WORST) Make yourself a cup of this turmeric filled delight! Turmeric is a spice known for its anti-inflammatory properties so incorporating it into your diet will be helpful in kicking your cold’s ass plus it’s good for your overall health so don’t just consume it when you’re sick!

Chicken Soup

It’s a classic for a reason. Chicken soup is a natural decongestant that literally has everything you need in order to combat a cold- protein, vitamins, minerals, calories and most importantly it’s a great source of fluids! I suggest adding some garlic to your soup as well since it can help fight bacteria and supercharge your immune system!

Water

Yup, nothing like some good ol’ fashioned water to help you flush out your toxins! Drinking plenty of fluids is key to staying hydrated while you’re sick so keep a water bottle next to you and if you’re just not a huge fan of plain H2O then drink coconut water for some flavor or even add some lemon to your water for added benefits! Sipping on warm tea that includes ginger, honey and lemon is great for soothing a sore throat as well since both ginger and honey have potent anti-bacterial effects!

Keep in mind that eating the correct foods when sick is not the only thing that will help your body to bounce back faster, it’s important you get plenty of rest and please please please wash your hands..it’s flu season y’all, germs are EVERYWHERE!
