Get Soft, Shiny, Beautiful Hair With This DIY Avocado, Honey & Olive Oil Hair Mask!

Spring has been a tease the last few days but I think it’s finally here to stay which means we can toss aside our stylish yet equally functional beanies we hide our bad hair days under!

Between the harsh cold air and blow-drying, my hair gets super dry and drabby, I guess you could say winter sucks the life out of it! Now that warmer weather is upon us, I’m holding myself accountable, making sure my hair looks fab at all times and only wearing a hat because it goes with my outfit and not because my hair is lookin’ a little rough!

One of my favorite ways to restore some life back into my hair is by doing a deep conditioning hair mask! I could go to the salon or use one of the many hair products on the market right now but I’m a huge fan of DIY and saving a few extra bucks each month!

Just how I like using random ingredients in my kitchen to make a new recipe, I love using what I already have to make a home made mask and 3 ingredients that you will ALWAYS find at my place are avocado, honey and olive oil-this combo is ideal for an ultra moisturizing and repairing hair mask!

This is a great mask to do if you have damaged hair and use hot tools often. The oils and fats found in avocado and olive oil are extremely hydrating and help to repair your dry, brittle hair while the honey is what will help to retain moisture and give your hair that Pantene commercial shine! I’ve read that adding a few drops of lavender essential oil can be helpful if you’re experiencing itchy skin and dandruff, I personally haven’t tried it but if anything it’ll at least help make it smell good!

Now to the fun part…mixing your magical hair savior together!

All you will need is:

  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Simply blend all of the ingredients together in a food processor until smooth and apply to damp hair! If you have thin hair or tend to have oilier roots, then I suggest starting an inch down from root and applying throughout your hair, focusing on the ends. Now if you’ve got thick, curly hair then apply GENEROUSLY all over! Once you’re done applying, toss it up in a bun or clip and let sit for about 30-45 minutes then rinse as usual! If you really want to make sure all of the nutrients get deep into your scalp then try putting on a shower cap and applying some heat to it either by use of blow-dryer for 15 minutes or sitting outside and letting the sunshine do its thing!

It might look like you have guac in your hair but that’s ok, embrace the look because you are about to have soft, shiny, luscious locks once you’re rinsed and blow-dried! *hair flip*

The Seasons Are Changing & So Should Your Skin Care Routine!

Spring has sprung my loves and you know what that means, time to switch up our skin routine! When it comes to skincare, the two most important things for me are exfoliation and sun protection! These are two things you most likely already incorporate into your daily routine (at least I hope so!) but it’s time to kick it into high gear and show your complexion a little extra lovin’ now that the seasons are changing!

Having a good exfoliant to get rid of all the dead skin cell buildup caused by the dry, winter air is key to revealing glowing, healthy looking skin! If you normally exfoliate once a week then add another day of exfoliation. I personally use a gentle exfoliating cleanser daily but I always make sure to do an exfoliating scrub once a week to really get rid of everything my skin has carried around throughout the week! If you don’t use an exfoliating cleanser then I recommend doing a scrub twice a week-on Sunday’s to help rejuvenate your skin and mid-week on Wednesday’s to give it a little refresh!

I absolutely SWEAR by SkinMedica and all of their products but their AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser is one of my favorites! This is the first step in my routine and it’s gentle enough for me to use both in the mornings and evenings. It contains natural ingredients such as jojoba oil, sugar cane extract and citrus extracts that seriously leave my skin feeling silky smooth and looking radiant afterwards!

As for a good exfoliating scrub, Feeling Beautiful Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask is my go to and it’s super affordable!

Did you know that 90% of skin aging is due to sue exposure?! I knew it was definitely a factor but yikes I didn’t know it was that much! Luckily the products from Supergoop cater to protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful ways and now that the weather is warmer and the sun is out to play,it’s important we apply SPF daily. No matter if I’m wearing make up or not, applying sunscreen is an essential part of my skin care routine and I refuse to leave the house without it! Supergoop’s Superscreen Daily Moisturizer is my fav right now because of it’s lightweight formula and it contains SPF 40!

If Supergoop is a little on the pricier side for you, then Cetaphil’s UVA/UVB Defense SPF50 Daytime Moisturizer is another great option that doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy and provides great protection!!

Having youthful looking skin not only consists of having a good skin care regimen but I believe it also has a lot to do with what we put into our bodies so try to have a clean diet, drink TONS of water and for a little extra glow try taking Love Wellness’ Good To Glow supplements that contain Vitamins C and E as well as collagen!!

Here’s to glowing not only in the Spring and Summer but all year round babes! If you have any other tips or products you like to use, please share them with me in the comments below!!

Eliminating Gluten From Your Diet 101

I always knew there was a reason why my gut would tell me to eat gluten-free…my body freaks out whenever I have any of it!

After doing an elimination diet and finding out that gluten was the trigger for my symptoms of bloating, brain fog, sore joints and fatigue, I decided that I had to say goodbye once and for all to it which actually has not been a hard transition since all of the recipes I tend to make are already gluten-free.

If you’ve recently found out that you’re allergic/sensitive to gluten or would just like to eliminate it from your diet in general, I’ve got plenty of tips for what you should and shouldn’t be eating! I feel like I’m practically a pro at all things GF since I’ve personally put my body to the test to find what does and doesn’t work for me nutrition wise!

Foods To Steer Clear Of

I’m not going to lie, avoiding gluten completely can be a bit of a challenge seeing as how there’s some trace of it in the majority of foods so don’t let the below list scare you off from living a gluten-free lifestyle, I promise the list to follow is filled with plenty of foods you most likely already enjoy!

Main sources of gluten:

  • Wheat-based foods (wheat flour, wheat bran, durum, spelt)
  • Rye
  • Barley
  • Malt
  • Brewer’s Yeast
  • Triticale

Foods that may have ingredients containing gluten:

  • Pasta (all wheat-based)
  • Bread (all wheat-based)
  • Cereals (unless labeled other wise)
  • Snack foods (crackers, roasted nuts, flavored chips and popcorn, pretzels, candy)
  • Baked goods (pizza, pastries, cookies, cakes)
  • Sauces (Teriyaki sauce, Soy sauce, marinades, salad dressings)
  • Beer

Foods To Eat

Gluten-Free is a little restricting y’all but there are plenty of other delicious and healthy options!

  • Fruits & Vegetables
  • Eggs
  • Meats & Fish (excepted coated or battered meats)
  • Nuts & Seeds
  • Herbs & Spices
  • Oils & Spreads
  • Dairy (plain products such as yogurt, milk and cheese-anything flavored may have added ingredients that contain gluten)
  • Grains (rice, buckwheat, quinoa, corn, tapioca, oats (if labeled gf)
  • Starches & Flours (Corn flour, potatoes, potato flour, chickpea flour, soy flour, almond meal/flour, coconut flour, tapioca flour)
  • Beverages (most except for beer)

Now that wasn’t too bad right?? You still get a variety of foods you can make flavorful meals with, just be sure to read all labels and if it says gluten-free, you’re good to go!

An example of what a typical “Gluten-Free Day In The Life” menu looks like for me would be: An omelet with veggies for breakfast, a quinoa salad with avocado, spinach, sliced tomatoes and cucumber for lunch, and for dinner either chicken or steak tacos with mushrooms and whatever other veggies I’m feelin’ that day in a corn tortilla!

Like I said, there are plenty of yummy options, all you have to do is get a little creative! The key is to focus on eating whole, single-ingredient foods (fruits, veggies, lean proteins) that way you’re sure to keep your gut healthy and happy!

Why Everyone Should Do An Elimination Diet At Least Once In Their Life

Skin freaking out and it’s not even that time of the month? Feeling bloated as f#ck and not sure why? I feel you girl! Anytime I’ve been faced with a breakout or feeling super fatigued, I would chalk it up to just being stressed from work but when I realized I was still feeling a little off even after practicing a little self-care, doing an elimination diet came to my attention and I thought why the hell not!

If you’re not exactly sure what an elimination diet is, it basically consists of you eliminating certain foods that might be causing digestive reactions and allergies, then reintroducing the foods one at a time over a 2-3 day period in order to determine which foods might be causing your symptoms. This process takes about 3-6 weeks due to the fact that antibodies take just about 3 weeks to dissolve so this is the minimum time needed for you to really notice any improvements.

A little update on how my elimination diet is going…ADIOS GLUTEN! I did the gluten exposure day a few days ago and since then I’ve been experiencing insane brain fog, bloating, sore ankles and knees, fatigue and vertigo I haven’t had in years made a comeback! To be honest I was a little skeptical about whether or not I would be able to identify what has been causing my symptoms but I’m so happy I’ve discovered this issue for me! I feel like everyone should do an elimination diet at least once in their life, it’s totally worth it and a much better way to isolate problem foods even if your diet is a little limiting and boring for a few weeks, you gotta do what you gotta do!

Here are the foods you should remove during an elimination diet:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Refined/Added Sugar
  • Corn
  • Alcohol
  • Peanuts
  • Eggs
  • Packaged, processed or fast foods
  • Certain nightshades
  • Fish
  • Citrus Fruits

Oof, just reading that makes me re-live my first thought from when I first heard of elimination diet…so what the heck CAN I eat?!

Think PALEO. Your plate should be made up of 40% fresh vegetables(leafy greens, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, brussel sprouts, squash), 30% clean sources of protein(grass-fed meat & poultry, cage-free eggs, wild-caught fish), 20% healthy fats(avocados, coconut oil, olive oil) and the remaining 10% fruit and whole-food carbohydrates.

The absolute best foods to have during this 3-6 week period are coconut products, this fat is easier to digest and helps to nourish a healing gut, bone broth, contains amino acids proline and glycine that help heal damaged cell walls, probiotics, help to replenish the good bacteria in your gut which balances intestinal PH while reducing inflammation and raw milk, which also contains probiotics and amino acids to help heal the gut.

As boring as this diet might sound, there really are huge benefits to doing it-you can discover unknown food allergies, provide relief for skin irritations, help reduce IBS symptoms, heal Leaky Gut Syndrome, prevent/treat learning disorders such as Autism and ADHD as well as fight migraine headaches!

So if you’re dealing with annoying skin flare ups, feeling low energy despite eating a healthy diet, experiencing joint pain, bloating, migraines or have difficulty sleeping, then I definitely suggesting giving an elimination diet a try, I promise it’s not as bad as it sounds and the results may surprise you!

No Dressing? No Problem! Make This Whole30 Avocado Sauce In Minutes!

Am I the only weirdo who actually likes it when they realize they don’t have all the necessary ingredients to complete their meal while cooking?? I find it strangely satisfying when I have to tweak a recipe or come up with something totally different on the fly.

This week I was faced with having a salad but no dressing and let me tell you there’s nothing worse than having a dry salad! A quick fix could have been to simply pour some olive oil on top but I love me a challenge so I decided to head to the fridge to see what I could possibly whip up.

With an avocado and a lime leftover from #TacoTuesday, I figured I could make an Avocado Sauce and not only was it easy to make, it turned out pretty damn good!

Usually a creamy avocado dressing would call for some type of sour cream or greek yogurt but since I’m doing Whole30, I decided to ditch the dairy (wasn’t in my refrigerator anyways) and use 5 ingredients I luckily had plenty of to make this amazing gluten-free sauce!!

7 Must-Haves Every Girl Needs In Her Closet

Hey babes! Anyone down for some Spring cleaning?? Aside from giving my apartment a little sprucing up, I’ve decided to gear the majority of my energy towards my closet and building more of a timeless wardrobe.

I love shopping just as much as the next girl but I tend to fill my closet with pieces I only use once or twice, so instead of buying what’s on trend each season, I’m making it a point to have my wardrobe be filled with 70% basics and the other 30% for whenever I have a “treat yo’self” moment and decide to buy a few different stand out items!

So what are the basics you ask? I’m sure you know about all of the following classics I’m going to list but I’m here to give you a little refresher just in case you still haven’t gotten around to owning them!

It doesn’t get anymore classic than a little black dress! You can go from day to night in your dress with a few minor accessory changes such as throwing on a pair of heels, jewelry and makeup for an evening occasion or dressing it down with a cardigan or blazer during the day!

There are so many different styles of LBD but the most important thing is that you feel like a total babe in it! Whether it’s sleeveless, V-neck, knee-length or short, be sure to find a dress that accentuates all of your favorite attributes making you look sexy yet sophisticated. No matter the occasion you will never feel over or underdressed with the iconic LBD.

White Button Down Shirt

If you know me then you know that I practically live in a white button down shirt! There are endless ways to wear this staple piece which makes it in my opinion, a true must-have in everyone’s (including men) closet. You can wear it solo, under a sweater, part of a suit, tucked in or out, with jeans, a skirt, with heels or a pair of sneakers…however you decide to style it make sure it always looks crisp, ironed and fits you well!

You know what I love more than a white button down? A good pair of hip-huggin’, booty lookin’ nice, pair of denim! If you think about it, you probably wear jeans almost every single day which is why splurging and buying a a few quality pairs is valid. I suggest having a light wash, dark wash and a black pair in whatever styles you find flatter you best. I usually go for a skinny, straight leg, cropped and a high waisted jean! Dress them up with heels and a blazer or opt for a  more day to day look with a pair of sneakers and a t-shirt.

Basic Tees

There’s nothing more effortless than a t-shirt with a pair of jeans.  You can give your tee some more edge by throwing a black leather jacket on top, pairing it with a printed skirt or keep it casual with leggings! White and black are a must but I would throw a gray in there too! I also recommend buying multiple of your favorite tees, especially your white ones because no matter how many times or how good you think you wash it, they always tend to look a bit dingy after awhile.

Black Blazer

If you don’t work in a corporate atmosphere you might think a blazer isn’t necessarily a “must- have” but it’s one structured piece of outwear I believe every one of us gals should own! I personally love a longer blazer, one that hits around mid-butt-you can style it with a pair of shorts and pumps or even sneakers and automatically look chic. A black blazer also goes great paired back to a pair of wide-leg trousers as well as jeans! You can go from work to date-night in a matter of seconds with this versatile item in your closet!

Black Pumps

Ahhh shoes, they’re my weakness!! A pair you will constantly see in my rotation are classic black pumps, they literally go with everything and can dress up any outfit! All you need is one good pair so go ahead and spend a few extra dollars on them, think of them as an investment!

White sneakers

Sporty Chic has kind of been my jam lately and the best way to pull off that look is with fresh white kicks! You can style them with dresses, jeans, skirts, leggings…pretty much anything! Get you a pair of adidas all white Stan Smith’s or Reebok Classics and you’re good to go for brunch out with the gals or a night out on the town with bae!

If you’re all about keeping up with the trends, try not to buy too many “it” pieces, buy one or two you can style back to your essentials!

What other pieces would you consider must-haves for us ladies to have in our closets?!

My Tips On How To Incorporate Self-Care At Work

Did you know that you don’t have to limit practicing self-care to just your off days?? It’s true babes! If anything, you should be practicing it on the reg, especially at work because lets face it, work and everything that comes along with it, can be stressful as hell!

Whether you work corporate or from home, there’s no escaping stress, it’s even possible for it to creep up when you’re at networking/social events so it’s important to always tune into your mind and body and know when to take a breather because guess what..taking a moment for yourself is OKAY!

Business trips also induce stress into our lives, we’re taken out of our routine, we’re expected to absorb or relay a certain amount of information in a small amount of time and more times than none we’re not actually able to enjoy the fact that our day to day has switched up even if it’s just for a day or two.

While speaking on a panel at SXSW in Austin, we were able to shed light on the importance of self-care in a work environment and believe it or not, while sitting up there alongside other badass women in business, I took a moment to really be present and feel grateful that I was even able to be there and share my passion with so many people.

All you need to do to get a little recharge to get back into the grind is take 1 minute, 5 or even 10 to focus on something other than work. I personally feel like my life is never ending stress therefore I make it a point to take plenty of ME moments throughout the day.

Below are some of my quick tips and tricks on how to not go totally insane when you’re feeling a little overwhelmed!

Be Present for 5-10 minutes

Being present means to simply be. I’m guilty for having my “break time” be a few minutes scrolling on the ‘gram to see what other people are up to but this doesn’t really help your motivation to keep working so I find it best to totally power off when I take my 5-10 minute break. I take this time to sit back, take a few deep breaths, think about what I’m grateful for that day and just be still. This allows me to hit refresh on my brain and focus my energy towards the rest of my work day.

Brush Your Hair

Bet you weren’t expecting to read that huh?!LOL Not only will you give yourself a little touch up visually but by brushing your hair you’re actually stimulating acupuncture points which help to calm your mind and help blood flow to your brain!

Express Yourself Through A Stream Of Consciousness

We’re all human, we all carry and express our emotions differently but the important thing is to get them out and not bottle anything up. There are times where I’m just having a shitty day and I unfortunately take that to work and end up having an even shittier day so I found that journaling and writing down what I was feeling as my day went on actually helped me to get rid of any negativity I may have been feeling. Somehow putting my thoughts down on paper actually helps me to realize that some things aren’t that big of a deal and I just need to take a chill pill. It’s also useful when I have a million different ideas going on in my head and need to quickly jot them down that way I don’t forget in the midst of a hectic day. Don’t stress yourself out by carrying around so many thoughts…write them down, get back to work and re-visit them when you have another free moment.

Have A Sensory Experience

Give your mood a boost during the day by tapping into your senses! In an article recently published by Forbes covering the panel at SXSW, I mentioned that “Taking a moment for yourself during a busy moment like SXSW can actually help you experience the event more fully. Try this mindfulness practice of focusing only on a sensory experience:the smells coming from the food trucks, the feeling of your body in a chair during a panel, or the noise from a band. That moment of focus will help to relieve any stress you may feel.” I find that having a sensory experience is not only important at events or at the office but it’s especially important you do this if you work from home. Take a moment to have a jam sesh and listen to your favorite song, this will help to boost your energy and concentration. I also find that lighting candles or even having fresh flowers on the table can automatically put me in a more relaxing mood when I take a deep breath and inhale scents I enjoy.

These are just a few of my favorite ways to bring me back to life when I feel like I’m on the verge of a complete burn out. Take care of yourselves guys, no amount of work/stress is worth you sacrificing your sanity!

Hosting Taco Tuesday At Your Place?Treat Your Guests To This Appetizing Vegan Queso Dip!

I’ve been back from my trip to Austin for just a few days now and I already can’t wait to visit again! I was seriously so lucky to be down there during the weekend(which is when I allow myself a cheat meal or two)but now that I’m back to my regularly scheduled program during the week, it’s important to me I stick to my dairy-free diet.

If you took a peek at my previous post about the hot spots I discovered while in Austin then you read about how much I loved the queso from Torchy’s Tacos, it was honestly the best queso I’ve ever tried and I have not been able to stop thinking about it, so much so that I decided to try making a vegan, dairy-free queso to satisfy my craving!

Before attempting to make this recipe I had my doubts, I didn’t think it could really be possible for dairy-free queso to taste just as good as what you get at Tex-Mex restaurants but the nutritional yeast used in this queso proved me wrong. Nutritional yeast is not only good for you because of all the proteins, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants it contains but it’s actually what gives the dip it’s creamy, cheesy flavor!

Try this vegan queso dip and allow it to blow your mind with all of it’s spice and kick…without the dairy!!

Visiting Austin Anytime Soon? Check Out These Hot Spots I Discovered While Speaking This Past Weekend At SXSW!

Austin, TX- I love you!

I had the BEST time this past weekend visiting Austin for SXSW! Not only did I get to speak about all things feminine care related on a Business In Wellness Panel hosted by Bloom, brunch it up Love Wellness style at THE RETREAT By Funkshion but I even found time to check out some of Austin’s charming hot spots!

Jugo Juicery

Since I started my celery juice journey, I was on the hunt to get my fix and I found the cutest juice bar that was down with the celery juice trend and sells everything from cold brewed coffee, smoothies, juices and a whole bunch of other yummy goodies to keep your body healthy & happy!

Torchy’s Tacos

So we’re all allowed a cheat day right? HELL YEA! I couldn’t go to Texas and not go to a Tex-Mex Restaurant, I mean we all know I freakin’ love tacos and let me tell you Torchy’s had some damn good ones and the best queso I’ve ever had! I know what you’re thinking, “aren’t you trying to eliminate dairy from your diet?!”…the answer is yes but c’mon guys, we can still live a healthy lifestyle while breaking the rules every now and then…balance!

Amy’s Ice Creams

If you’re looking for a sweet treat in Austin then look no further than Amy’s! The vibe of the shop is super fun and the ice cream is AMAZING! With so many different flavors it was hard to choose just one so I had a “f#ck it” moment and got a double scoop of Belgian Chocolate and Mexican Vanilla!

By George

After trying all of the delicious food this city has to offer, I managed to squeeze some time in to do a little shopping and found the chic boutique that is By George. They had a great selection of jewelry, bags and my weakness…shoes!

Thank you for your hospitality, good food and even better conversation Austin! Can’t wait to come back!

My Thoughts On The Hyped Up Trend That Is #CeleryJuice

It’s official guys…I’ve hopped onto the #celeryjuice trend to see what all the hype is about!

Although all of the millions of articles and posts on social media praising celery juice was enough to make me want to give it a try, it was Kelly LeVeque’s (@bewellbykelly) post about it on her page that inspired me to finally give in. She explained that at a minimum, celery juice is super hydrating and maybe anti-inflammatory, which is what I mainly look for wellness wise so I thought why the hell not, I’ll hop on the bandwagon to to see if it really lives up to its new found popularity!

If you’re not aware of the recent celery juice craze then 1. What rock have you been hiding under?! and 2. Allow me to fill you in babes!

According to the Medical Medium, Anthony William, celery juice is a “miracle potion” that he’s been drinking/talking about for years now! He swears by it while others have their doubts about how beneficial it really is for you. I’ve been doing my research and have found some interesting myths & facts about celery juice I’d like to share with you!

The one thing I’ve read the most is that you should be drinking about 16 ounces of it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to reap all of its benefits. Dr.Gabriella Safieh from Parsley Health reports that there’s no medical evidence to support drinking celery juice on an empty stomach has any benefit at all so I say you should just drink it whenever you want, after all I would assume that the essential part is that you’re consuming it in the first place right??

Eating Vs. Juicing. This is where things get a little confusing for me. Everyone is recommending you juice celery stalks but by doing that you lose all of its healthy fiber and I don’t know about you but I’m always looking to incorporate more fiber into my diet to feed the healthy bacteria in my gut! Juicing celery will still give you a good amount of vitamin C and K as well as folate and potassium but by eating it or incorporating it into a smoothie, you’ll be getting more of its benefits such as reduce blood pressure and lower inflammation.

To drink solo or to add a few other beneficial ingredients? That is the question! So apparently it’s a big no no to add any other fruit, vegetables or even ice to celery juice because you only really get the healing benefits of it if it’s pure. This is where @bewellbykelly came into play and convinced me to give celery juice a try because she added a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of pink himalayan salt to hers! Her reason for it? To amplify all of the benefits and really get in those electrolytes! Now there’s obviously nothing wrong with drinking celery juice on its own but it’s definitely an acquired taste so adding in a little bit of lemon and salt really helps to give it an extra kick!

Now to be fair it’s only been about a week since I started drinking celery juice and to be honest I do feel energized and everything seems to be flowing normally but I can’t tell if it’s just because of the celery or because I’m hydrated AF. I already drink a good amount of water as it is, does this extra sixteen ounces of what is essentially electrolyte water really make all that much of a difference? I really don’t know but all I know is that it doesn’t hurt to drink so my advice? Drink (or eat) it whenever, however and as often as you want! Cheers to making your own rules!
