Holiday Travel Tips To Help Keep Your Mind, Body & Soul In Check

It’s that crazy time of year again when we stress out over schedules, airfares, luggage, gifts, diet and exercise! AHH it’s enough to drive you crazy but it doesn’t have to! It’s mind over matter baby and I’ve got some tips to help you have one less thing to stress out about during the holiday season.

Traveling. The word alone gives me anxiety but I’ve finally figured out ways to help ease the process for me and make it an enjoyable experience.

First things first, just breathe. Before heading out on your long or short journey home or wherever you destination may be, take a few moments to meditate and relax. Taking a few deep breaths can really help to calm your mind and help you think clearly- trust me this is useful when making sure you don’t leave anything behind.

Speaking of leaving things behind, make a check list! Write down a list of everything you’ll be needing for your trip and start checking them off once you have it packed or in your handbag ready to go! This is honestly one of the best old school ways to ensure you don’t forget your passport or favorite moisturizer!

Leave early. Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to where you’re going just in case anything unexpected happens along the way(i.e. traffic, THE WORST!!) I rather be super early and relaxed than rushing and stressed!

Pack healthy snacks!! We all know the airport literally has no healthy food options or if they happen to have a packet of raw almonds available it costs an arm and a leg so to prevent from reaching for the fast food, pack a few granola bars and fruits to snack on! I know it can be a bit tricky with what you can and can’t take with you through TSA so I also suggest making sure you eat right before heading to the airport. Oatmeal, lean protein and TONS of water are all great examples of what you should eat pre-flight while sugar, alcohol and salty snacks are all things you should avoid-save the wine for when you arrive and can unwind!

Freshen Up. Am I the only one that feels gross during a travel day?! It doesn’t matter if I’m on a 5 hour flight or just a 2 hour car ride once I get in I have to immediately shower but sometimes life happens and we don’t always get that luxury so we must prepare! I personally love carrying around cleansing wipes with me, they’re easy to pack and no fuss at all! The do it all wipes from Love Wellness are my go-to, I just toss them in my bag and I’m able to freshen up and give myself a cleansing pick-me-up on the go!

Dress comfortably.  Say YASSSS to leggings and sneakers! Now is your time to rock your dope athleisure look and be cozy AF while you travel. Comfort is key to having a relax, successful travel day, plus if you’re wearing your running shoes you’ll be more inclined to actually get a workout in wherever you go!

Why Colombia Is My Next Vacay Destination

Oh how I love Colombia. The romantic, colorful streets of Cartagena, the warm Caribbean sun, the friendly vibes, and the delicious arepas and empanadas (I LOVE CARBS) simply cannot be beat. Cartagena is a hidden gem of a city, and I’m so excited to go back in 2018.

So, back to Colombia, the colorful girlfriend of my dreams. There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful country and because it hasn’t been totally exposed by travelers yet, your time there will feel authentic and special. Some of my favorite MUST-SEE things you should add to your list (or Noken will do it for you):

ISLAND HOPPING/GETTIN’ THAT CARIBBEAN SUN

YAS, glamazons….Cartagena is a coastal city on the Caribbean Sea. Lots of people don’t know that, but surprise, it’s gorgeous. My favorite day on any trip is always boat day, and I loooove boat day in Cartagena. Sail through the Rosario Islands and to Baru Beach. Spend the day hopping on and off the boat into the warm, clear sea, and you can also stop at a beach club to have lunch and lay around. I’d spend multiple days on the water if I could.

WALK THE WALLED CITY

If you really want to turn your Instagram game up a notch and get gorgeous photos in front of colorful homes, head inside the walled city of Cartagena. It’s def busier here, but totally worth it (I like to stay inside the walled city, too…the Sofitel is top-notch). The streets are so charming with tons of shopping and restaurants here for you to browse and pop into. I like Casa Chiqui and St. Dom for shopping.

This part of the city is full of rich, Colombian history. A walking tour of this area with your Noken app will certainly be a highlight of your trip.

GET ON A ROOF

Cartagena has absolutely no shortage of swanky rooftop bars and pools. When the sun is setting, head over to Townhouse or Alquimico for a delish local cocktail with your pals or lover. You’ll get that gorgeous view of the seaside city you’ve been dying to see.

GET LOST

I’m also a big proponent of spending a day getting totally lost wherever you are and discovering places on your own as you wind through new city streets. It’s in these moments that you find yourself when you travel. As I mentioned in another travel post, my 2018 is all about rediscovering travel for myself, by myself (or with a couple friends). Exploring a new destination enriches your soul unlike anything else. Dive in headfirst into Cartagena like I have, and you’ll certainly discover a charming city that’s not over commercialized or overrun with tourists. It’s a beautiful city with rich history in a warm, tropical setting. It doesn’t get much better than that.

So now that I’m an Iceland insider, here are some of the basics you should know for your own trip, along with some personal tips that made my trip one to remember.

  1. If you’re heading to Europe, you can do a stop-over in Iceland for free on Iceland Air (you have to do the leg-work here for info on this tip as we only went to Iceland) but it’s a great way to get there for a few days in more affordable fashion.
  2. Try to take a daytime flight that arrives late at night, so that you can wake up at your hotel refreshed and ready for a day in Reykjavik, rather than take a red-eye and suffer through Day 1.
  3. Explore Reykjavik on your first day in the country – it’s a sweet and beautiful little city that’s quite walkable, especially if you follow Noken’s walking guide that leads you through the most charming parts. I’d definitely recommend getting off the beaten path here and venture into some neighborhoods to see where the locals live. The color houses with wooden sideboards are characteristic of this seaside city and are not to be missed.
  4. On Day 2 and beyond get out and explore the country, but rely on your rental car to get you there. Iceland is a country that is easy to navigate and drive, with the beautiful roads unclogged and seemingly  police-free. Seriously, I didn’t see a law enforcement presence in Iceland at any time during my trip. No crime I guess. Don’t speed though – they have radar set up along the major roads and will send you a speeding ticket in the mail if you go too fast.
  5. Climb the Solheimajokull Glacier in the Southcoast of Iceland. This is a full-on Nat Geo experience that’s not to be missed. Hiking boots are a must, as well as weather proof pants and tops. They’ll provide you with crampons for you shoes, an ice pick (seriously), and helmet. If you are not able-bodied, you should skip this. I fell twice during the climb and while I didn’t injure myself, I really could have.
  6. See the geyser in Geysir on the Golden Circle. The Golden Circle is this cool 3ish hour drive out of Reykjavik that is actually a circle, but drops you at some of the most famous sites in Iceland. The geyser is a natural wonder of the world, and the water bubbles up into the air reliably every 8 minutes or so. Be prepared to get a little wet!
  7. If/When you go to the Blue Lagoon prepare for your hair to feel extremely dry and coarse if you submerge your head into the mineral-rich waters. There is a huge amount of silica in the water there, and once it clings on to your locks be prepared for it to feel really weird for a while. When I got back home to the US I immediately began adding baking soda to a clarifying shampoo to break down the minerals left in my locks. After about a week of doing this my hair is starting to feel normal again.
  8. Pack light. I wore what I would wear everyday in NYC in Reykjavik though you’ll see many tourists in outdoor gear walking through the city. Most people thought we were locals because we chose to dress in street clothes instead. If you go on adventures, bring the appropriate gear (hiking books, waterproof layers, gloves, hats, etc).
  9. Leave the city to see the Northern Lights. We didn’t see them and I wish we had as we heard they were visible on the nights we were there.
  10. Don’t be afraid to get in the car and GO! We had our best days when we explored the countryside during a 5-6 hour car ride.
  11. Save yourself plenty of time when you leave Iceland as Keflavik Airport is a shit-show when you depart. There are no seating areas surrounding the gates so everyone lines up in a confused shuffle clogging hallways, making it hard to get on your flight. Checking in was pretty nasty too. Immigration however, when arriving and departing, is a breeze.
  12. If you want to drink while there, buy your booze at the duty free shop in the airport downstairs before you get in your rental car and go. Everything in Iceland is REALLY EXPENSIVE (like, $15 US for a beer) so take advantage of that duty-free liquor store.
  13. Everyone speaks English. Everyone is friendly.
  14. Iceland is one of the cleanest, most pristine places I’ve visited. If you visit, keep it that way. Have Fun!

Six Tips for a Healthy Vacation

Vacation (or “vacay” as I call it) is the perfect time to relax and hit the reset button on our hectic daily lives.

At the same time, however, vacay often comes with plenty of opportunities to indulge in not-so-healthy activities opposite from your usual routine.

Because you’ve worked so hard to earn your much-deserved time off, the last thing you need is to stress about ways to stay healthy. Why ruin feeling amazing in your own skin just because you’re in a new place?

Walk everywhere! There is so much to see and do when you are in a new place. Make nature your playground–take a hike, go for a run, or ride a bike to soak everything in. Get around town with your own two feet! When I am traveling I always pack a pair of sneakers, ditch public transportation and soak up the atmosphere.

TREAT YOURSELF

I always allow myself one treat a day.

I always allow myself one treat a day. It could be a meal, dessert or even a frozen drink from the tiki bar. It will satisfy your cravings and meet your body’s vacation needs! Always follow up your not-so-healthy treat with something healthy. Ate a crazy chocolate filled croissant for breakfast? Make sure to have a big, refreshing salad for lunch.

PLAN IT OUT

I don’t travel without snacks. My go-to snack is an RXBAR. They’re made of few, healthy ingredients that are extremely filling. Real meals, however, require some more planning. I always brow through menus and YELP before heading to the restaurant. I plan out exactly what I’m going to have beforehand to avoid any mind-wandering, last minute, unhealthy impulses.

ATTEND FREE WORKOUTS

IMG_8298Search the area you are visiting for fun free workouts. I was just at LOCKN’ Music Festival in Virginia where they had free yoga every morning. I made sure to take full advantage of this! Traveling with friends or family that don’t want to workout? Find a fun restaurant or venue that has live music where you can go get your groove on and burn calories while having fun!

DRINK UP

IMG_4807Make sure to drink plenty of water. And no, drinking bottomless mimosas or rosé does not count as hydrating just because it contains water. At the same time, it is totally OK to have few alcoholic beverages. Try not to drink away your daily calorie intake by going for something nice and light. My go-to drink is a white wine spritzer with just a little bit of wine and extra spritzer. It allows me to have a few drinks with my friends and family without feeling the calorie guilt.

EAT LOCAL AND FRESH

Find restaurants in the neighborhood that are farm to table or use ingredients from local farms.

The ingredients spend less time in transit, which keeps the product as fresh as possible. Unlike their processed counterparts, they retain a good amount of nutrients. Step outside of your comfort zone and try new meals!

Keep it simple.  Dresses are always fun, but not when you’re struggling through security. To avoid fuss, create a no-fail base look that you can change with some subtle touches. A comfy pair of jeans (or dark leggings), a cool top and a pair of flats? Classic.

Layer up. Depending on your location, and especially if you’re traveling between two different climates, layers are your best friend. Keep a scarf and a jacket for those unexpected temperature changes in your carry-on.
